February 8, "La Flor en la Colina", Melbourne Composers' League concert, BMW Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne, featuring Australian and Chilean composers, including Peter Tahourdin, Andrián Pertout, Carlos Zamora, Aliocha Solovera, Antonio Tenace, Eduardo Cáceras,Alejandro Guarello. The renowned blues harmonica player, Corky Siegel, will be collaborating with Johanna to produce a new concerto for harmonica and orchestra. Four workshops will be held at the Victorain College of the Arts between April 15 and 20. The work will be performed on April 22nd. Corky and Johanna will be accompanied by the Raga Dolls Salon Orchestra, including David Osborne (director and concertmaster), Aaron Barnden (violin), Barbara Hornung (viola), and Leah Hooper (cello). Featrued solists are: Corky Siegel (harmonica), Joe Chindamo (piano accordion), Antony Field (guitar), Peter Neville (percussion). Conductor: Kevin Purcell. Johanna will be giving a joint paper with Sue Tweg (Monash University) entitled "Giving Voice to Macaria". Johanna and Sue plan to collaborate on a new opera based upon "The Children of Herakles" by Euripides. This paper describes some of the initial processes of this work in progress and looks at some of thc challenges of collaboration in the overall creative process. Excerpts will be performed by soprano Judith Dodsworth. |

The conference is being convened by the Core Group for Tibetan Cause-India facilitiated by the Department of Information and International Relations, Central Tibetan Administraion. It offers an opportunity and platform for all TSGs to meet and exchange views and experiences with each other and with the CTA. Johanna will be attending with the President of the Tibetan Women's Association and Friends Australia, Sonam Dolker. The conference will be addressed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Joanne Cole is currently completing a Master's Degree in voice at VCAM. Her concert will feature works by Johanna, taken from the Song Cycle "Becoming" (set to haiku by various poets in English, Japanese, and French) and "Seven Tanka" set to text by Melbourne-based poet, Graeme Ellis. The concert will also feature Andrew MacGregor on shakuhachi.

This joint Musicological Society of Australia/New Zealand Musicological Society conference is on the theme of "Re-visions in understanding the practice of music making (composition, performance etc.), the context of music making. and the role and purpose of music research". Johanna will be presenting a paper entitled, "Collaboration and Creative Process in Musical Composition: Two Case Studies". The case studies are collaborations between Johanna and blues harmonica player, Corky Siegel, in the composition of her "Concerto for Blues Harmonica"; and between Johanna and dramatist, Sue Tweg, on the opera "The Children of Herakles". |
CORKY SIEGEL is a harmonica virtuoso, pianist, singer, songwriter, band leader, and music educator. He has produced 35 recordings including the renowned Deutsche Grammophon recording of William Russo's "Street Music", featuring Corky as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony Orhcestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. The recording won the prestigious French Grande Prix du Disque.
Corky has spent over 32 years performing in "Third Stream" symphonic blues. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Boston Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Artur Fiedler's Boston Pops, Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, and the orchestras of Mexico City, Lisbon, Portugal and many others. He is the leader of Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues and the Siegel-Schwall Band. Both ensembles have performed in Art Centres and Festivals worldwide, to critical acclaim.
Corky was personally mentored by blues greats such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Hound Dog Taylor, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, and James Cotton. He has appeared on the same bills as names such as Big Brother, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Buddy Guy, Joni Mitchell, James Cotton, and Steppenwolf. During the 70s he toured with Bob Hope and in the 80s he appeared with Pete Seger, Doc Watson, and Albert King. He wrote and performed on films such as "Wanted Dead or Alive" and the TV Series, Carl Sagan's "Cosmos".
Corky was an elected Trustee of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science (the Grammys) from 1995 to 2001. Corky and fellow bandmember Jim Schwall of the Siegel-Schwall Band received Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2009 Chicago Music Awards.
